course overview

• duration: 6 weeks
• session length: 2 hours 30 minutes per week (including 15 minutes for cleaning)

in this course, you’ll immerse yourself in the fundamentals of wheel-thrown pottery, covering basic throwing techniques, pulling, turning and trimming, and surface textures and decorative methods using the wheel. classes are run in small groups of up to 6 to ensure personalised instruction and ample space.

course outline

• week 1: introduction to wedging, centring, compressing, and pulling – you’ll create your first pot, a wide, shallow dish.
• week 2: continued practice, working on pieces with taller walls, such as mugs, bowls, or vases.
• week 3: free practice on the wheel, plus an introduction to handle techniques.
• week 4: experimenting with larger forms and shapes.
• week 5: turning and finishing – refining shapes, adding handles, and preparing pieces for firing.
• week 6: introduction to glazing techniques – apply glaze to your final pieces.

clay information

• clay types: stoneware studio clay, white stoneware
• clay charges: charged on weight before bisque firing – £1 per 100g for stoneware studio clay, £1.05 per 100g for white stoneware

we recycle clay to ensure efficient use of resources and minimal waste. please do not bring in external materials without consulting staff prior to the session.
